Preparing for your Permanent Makeup Appointment

Preparing for your Permanent Makeup Appointment

So you've taken the leap and booked your appointment, congratulations! Now what? You know that getting your brows done is a big investment, and you want to make sure you give your brows their best chance at great retention! In order to ensure your appointment and your healing go as smoothly as possible, here are some things you can do (and avoid doing) before your appointment!

Not Drinking Alcohol

Did you know that drinking alcohol before your appointment can affect the outcome of your permanent makeup service? Yes, that’s true! Alcohol can cause dehydration, which can minimize pigment retention and lead to uneven results. So, it’s best to avoid consuming any alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours before your appointment.

Avoid Tanning, Botox, and Exfoliating Treatments For 2 Weeks

Permanent makeup cannot be performed on sunburned skin, and having temporary color on your skin may lead to the wrong choice in pigment color for your brows. Botox can take up to 2 weeks to settle, and if permanent makeup is done before they are settled, they will end up asymmetrical. Retinoids, chemical exfoliants and skin brightening treatments all thin the skin, which can cause more bleeding at your appointment. More bleeding=worse retention, so it's best to avoid these products and services for two weeks leading up to your appointment.

Stop Taking Blood-Thinning Medications

Before your permanent makeup appointment, it’s vital to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil for at least a week. These medications increase the risk of bruising and bleeding, which hinders the healing process and the final results of the permanent makeup. If you’re unsure about whether your medication is blood-thinning, consult with your doctor or your beauty therapist.

Eat a Full Meal

It’s essential to eat a full meal before your permanent makeup service to maintain your energy levels throughout the process. When you’re hungry, your blood sugar levels will drop, making you feel weak or dizzy. This can cause discomfort and affect your overall experience in the treatment room.

Preparing for Aftercare

Aftercare is a crucial part of preparing for a permanent makeup service. To ensure your skin heals correctly and to prolong the results, avoid using makeup, swimming, or exposing your skin to direct sunlight for at least 10 days after the appointment. When booking your appointment make sure you look ahead at your schedule to make sure that you don't have any plans that will interfere with your aftercare instructions for two weeks post-appointment. Your beauty therapist will provide you with post-treatment care instructions, make sure to follow them religiously.

Getting a permanent makeup service can add an immediate and lasting improvement to your daily beauty routine. But proper preparation is key to achieving the results you desire and minimizing the risk of complications. Luckily, before and after care is the same whether you're getting microblading, powder brows, or combination brows. Before your appointment, avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications, eat a full meal,  and prepare for the aftercare process to get the most out of your experience. Speak with your brow artist if you have any questions or concerns about preparing for your permanent makeup service.
