Microblading, Powder Brows, Nanoblading, Ombre Brows, What's The Difference?
Eyebrows are an important part of our facial features, and they can make or break one's appearance. Fortunately, the advancements in beauty technology have paved the way for a cosmetic solution that can give you the desired brow style, shape, and thickness that you've always wanted. However, with the various eyebrow tattooing techniques available, it may seem daunting to decipher which one is best for you. In this post, we will explore the difference between microblading, powder brows, and combination brows, as well as some of the other names you might see as you search for what style is right for you.
Microblading:
Microblading gained popularity over the past few years, and for a good reason. This technique uses a hand held device with a small, sharp blade to deposit pigments under the skin in the brow area that mimics the look of natural hair strokes. Microblading is ideal for those with thinning or sparse brows, as it helps to create a natural, fuller effect. The process is quite delicate and requires a skilled aesthetician to create the desired effect. Microblading typically requires touch-ups every 12-18 months to maintain the results. Microblading works best on clients with tight, healthy skin that is normal-dry. If your skin is mature, thin, or oily, you may not have good retention with microblading and will probably need more frequent touchups.
Powder Brows:
Powder Brows, also known as ombre brows, is a technique that creates a soft, powdered effect. Unlike microblading, this technique does not mimic hair strokes, but rather it mimics the look of a powdery eyebrow pencil. Powder brows are achieved through a process of shading or stippling using a machine. This technique creates a more defined, gradient look that can be more natural or more defined depending on your preference and your natural brow hair. The results are generally long-lasting, with touch-ups recommended every 2-3 years. Powder brows are compatible with most skin types.
Combination Brows:
As the name suggests, Combination Brows (or combo brows) combine both microblading and powder/shading techniques. This technique creates a more textured look by adding hairlike strokes to a powdered base. Combination Brows are ideal for those who want a more natural-looking brow while still achieving a defined, bolder look. The results are long-lasting, typically requiring touchups every 1.5-3 years, depending on your skin type and lifestyle.
Nano Brows/Nanoblading:
Nanoblading is a newer player in the permanent makeup scene. Nanoblading creates a similar look to microblading, by adding artificial hair strokes to the brows. The difference is in the technique. Rather than using a blade to slice the skin like microblading, nanoblading is done with a smaller needle and a machine (like powder brows), causing less trauma to the skin.
Choosing the right style of brows is critical to ensuring your long term happiness with your investment. Talk to your artist about your skin, your lifestyle, and the end result you're looking for and they will be able to help you choose the technique that's right for you!
